Chains used by games — the ecosystem view

“Which chain is the game on” used to be an esoteric question. In 2026 it’s a practical one: the chain determines your wallet, your transaction fees, which marketplace can see your items, and whether the game’s platform is stable infrastructure or a shrinking island. This is the ecosystem-level view — for what blockchains are generally, NFTUniverse covers that; for a specific game’s chain, NFTVideoGames does.

The 2026 consolidation picture#

The chain landscape for gaming consolidated hard through 2026 — which is itself the signal about where the activity actually is:

  • Gaming-dedicated chains survived where they had real games. Ronin (Sky Mavis) and Immutable’s chain carry actual player bases, which is why they absorbed migrations rather than being abandoned.
  • Gaming-dedicated chains died where they were only infrastructure. DeFi Kingdoms Chain — a whole custom Avalanche subnet for one game — was wound into Avalanche C-Chain in August 2026. Infrastructure without a player base is dead weight.
  • The “every game gets its own chain” thesis collapsed. The 2024-2025 app-chain wave ended in mergers: too many chains for too few players.
  • General-purpose chains with gaming segments kept their niches — Solana’s gaming segment and Avalanche’s (post-DFK-merger) remain live but undifferentiated.

The meaningful gaming chains right now#

Chain Model Gaming posture Risk note
Ronin Gaming-dedicated → pivoting general L2 Largest surviving web3 game platform; canonical chain for its ecosystem Sky Mavis pivots Ronin to general Ethereum L2 May 2026 — gaming focus diluting
Immutable Chain Gaming-dedicated (merged) Consolidated Immutable X + zkEVM into one chain Jul 2026 All-eggs-one-ecosystem
Solana General-purpose Gaming segment survives (Star Atlas lineage, indie titles) Gaming is a niche on a general chain — platform risk sits with the game, not the chain
Avalanche General-purpose DFK merger consolidated its gaming activity into C-Chain Post-merger gaming is thin
GUNZ Gaming-dedicated Newest entry (Gunzilla / Off the Grid) Early-stage, single-game dependency

What the chain actually determines for a player#

  1. Which wallet you need. Ronin Wallet for Ronin; Immutable Passport for Immutable; Phantom/generic for Solana. Chain choice is wallet choice.
  2. Where assets trade. A Ronin item lists on Ronin Market; an Immutable item on TokenTrove. The marketplace layer follows the chain, not the game brand.
  3. Fee exposure. Gaming-dedicated chains subsidise transactions (often free or fractions of a cent); general chains expose you to real gas.
  4. Bridging risk. Moving assets between chains means bridges — the historically most-exploited infrastructure in crypto. Ronin’s own bridge was famously drained for ~$600M in 2022. Chain-hopping is where asset risk concentrates.
  5. Platform longevity. A chain is infrastructure the game can’t leave cheaply — a dying chain is a dying platform underneath every game on it.

What to actually check before a game asks you to bridge#

  • Is the chain itself on our status board as active or consolidating?
  • Does the game live on its chain’s primary venue or an orphaned sidechain about to be merged?
  • Does the game require you to bridge (worst case — they’re asking you to take bridge-contract risk to play), or is everything on one chain?

The 2026 lesson is simple: fewer chains, more games on them. A game on a chain with no other games is a game on borrowed infrastructure.
