Gaming platforms compared (descriptive)
Through the 2026 consolidation wave, five platforms carry most surviving web3 gaming. This is a descriptive comparison — what each platform is, how it’s built, and where the risk sits. No rankings, no “best platform” verdicts; the honest differences are structural, not promotional.
The comparison table#
| Ronin (Sky Mavis) | Immutable | Mythical / Pulse | Open Loot | GUNZ (Gunzilla) | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Model | gaming-dedicated chain+platform | gaming-dedicated chain+platform | platform + marketplace on Polkadot | platform layer for Big Time Studios | chain+marketplace for one flagship game |
| Flagship | Axie lineage ecosystem | Gods Unchained, Illuvium, Guild of Guardians | NFL Rivals, Pudgy Party | Big Time | Off the Grid |
| Wallet | Ronin Wallet (external) | Immutable Passport (embedded) | in-app + optional Pulse wallet | Open Loot account | GUNZ wallet layer |
| Marketplace | Ronin Market | TokenTrove | Pulse Market | Open Loot Market | GUNZ marketplace |
| Onboarding | self-custody, seed phrase | email login hides chain | mainstream app-first | account-first | mainstream app-first |
| Ownership model | onchain_assets | onchain_assets | hybrid | hybrid | hybrid |
| Status | active | active | active | active | early_access |
| Regulated sensitivity | token mechanics | none flagged | token mechanics | token mechanics | none flagged |
What the table actually says#
Two on-chain-native platforms (Ronin, Immutable) where assets are tokens end-to-end and self-custody is available. These carry the largest game catalogs but also the full crypto security burden — wallet discipline and signature safety apply in full.
Three hybrid platforms (Mythical, Open Loot, GUNZ) running mainstream app UX with a tokenized premium tier on top. These are friendlier to onboard (normal login, normal store purchase) but the “NFT” label covers only the tokenized fraction — read which items are actually on-chain.
The structural risks per model#
- Ronin: ecosystem consolidation risk — Sky Mavis is pivoting Ronin to a general Ethereum L2 (May 2026), so gaming focus is diluting even as the platform stays active. Its 2022 bridge exploit (~$600M) is also the cautionary tale for chain-level risk.
- Immutable: all-eggs consolidation — Immutable X and zkEVM merged into one chain (Jul 2026), so every game on the platform now shares one infrastructure fate.
- Mythical/Open Loot/GUNZ: platform dependency — a hybrid platform dying means both the app games and their marketplace die together; there’s no external venue for the tokenized tier.
- Single-game platforms (GUNZ especially): one flagship title carries the whole chain — game failure is platform failure.
Which model for which player#
- Want maximum game selection and don’t mind self-custody: the on-chain platforms (Ronin, Immutable).
- Want mainstream game UX with optional crypto: the hybrids (Mythical, Open Loot, GUNZ).
- Either way: check the platform’s status on the status board before investing time — platform-level health is the whole risk profile.
What we deliberately don’t compare#
- Token prices or “which platform’s token will do best” — financial-return framing is outside our perimeter.
- Game-by-game verdicts — that’s NFTVideoGames’ layer.
- Marketplace fee/choice guidance — NFTMarketplace’s layer.
