Setting up a game wallet (Ronin, Passport, Sequence)

Every blockchain game needs a wallet — but which wallet and how much setup depends on the platform’s onboarding model. This guide covers the three models you’ll actually hit, and what “setting up” means for each. (Generic wallet creation and seed-phrase security are NFTUniverse’s layer — this is the gaming-specific version.)

Model A: embedded wallets — the email-login path#

Used by Immutable Passport, Sequence-powered games, and most mainstream-facing 2026 titles.

Setup: sign up with email or social login at the game’s official site. The platform creates a wallet for you behind the login — done.

What you actually have: a self-custody or platform-custodied wallet keyed to your login. With Passport, the wallet is non-custodial (keys secured for you by the platform’s infrastructure); with others, custody varies — our records’ ownership_model says which regime each platform runs.

Honest notes: this is the mainstream-safe path — no seed phrase to lose, no signature UX to get phished on. The trade-off is you’re trusting the platform’s custody and recovery model. If they disappear, your recovery depends on their export tooling existing — check whether the platform offers a key-export option before putting real value there.

Model B: external wallets — the bring-your-own path#

Used by Ronin (Ronin Wallet), Solana games (Phantom), and most EVM titles (MetaMask).

Setup:

  1. Install the wallet extension/app from the official domain only (fake wallet installs are the oldest drain in the book).
  2. Create a new wallet — write the seed phrase on paper, offline, in a place that survives a house fire. Never photograph it, never type it into anything except the wallet itself during recovery.
  3. Fund it if needed — a small amount of the chain’s token for gas (RON for Ronin, SOL for Solana). Gaming-dedicated chains subsidise most transactions; expect cents at most.
  4. Connect to the game’s official site when prompted — the connect action itself signs nothing that moves assets; the first transaction you sign is where attention is required.

Honest notes: maximum control, maximum responsibility. There’s no support desk for a lost seed phrase or a bad signature — the safety pages on this site exist because self-custody is where the harm concentrates.

Model C: the hybrid path#

Platforms like Mythical run a normal app account with an optional on-chain wallet layer for premium items. Setup is app-account-first; the wallet surfaces only when you touch the tokenized tier. You can often play the entire game without ever setting up the crypto side — and should, until you actually want to trade assets.

Before you sign anything — the 30-second check#

  1. Is this the game’s verified domain (not an ad, not a DM link)?
  2. Is the wallet prompting a connection (harmless) or a signature (pay attention)?
  3. If it’s a signature: does it say setApprovalForAll, permit, or an eth_sign with unreadable data? — stop and check the approvals guide before proceeding.
  4. Is this wallet your dedicated gaming wallet, separate from anything you’d cry about losing?

What a healthy setup looks like#

  • One gaming wallet per platform you actually use (don’t reuse your vault wallet).
  • Seed phrase offline and physically stored.
  • Small balances — only what the game needs.
  • Bookmarked official domains for the game + its marketplace.
  • Approval surface audited quarterly — revoke what you’re not using.
