What you need before playing a blockchain game
The universal checklist — applies to every blockchain game in the ecosystem, because the requirements are set by the platform and chain, not the individual game. Per-game specifics live on NFTVideoGames; this is the horizontal layer.
The five requirements (in order)#
1. A wallet — but which kind depends on the platform.
- Embedded-wallet platforms (Immutable’s Passport, Sequence-powered games): an email address is the whole requirement. The platform creates a wallet behind your login — you may never see a seed phrase. Requirement: an email you control.
- External-wallet platforms (Ronin, Solana games, most EVM titles): you bring your own wallet — Ronin Wallet for Ronin, Phantom for Solana, MetaMask for EVM. Requirement: install it, secure the seed phrase offline, fund it if the game needs gas or a starter asset.
2. The right chain/asset setup. Check what chain the game runs on (the game’s site, or our status board). If it’s Ronin, everything lives on Ronin — you may need a small amount of RON for gas or a marketplace purchase. If it’s Immutable, assets live on Immutable’s chain and Passport handles the wallet layer. Never bridge assets into a game before verifying the chain — bridge mistakes are the most expensive errors in this space.
3. The actual game client. From the verified official domain only — see the fake-sites guide for why this matters. Distribution is now mainstream: many web3 games are on Epic Games Store, app stores, or first-party launchers. If a “download” asks for your wallet before the game runs, that’s the fake-site pattern.
4. Money for the entry asset — usually zero. Most surviving 2026 games are free or near-free to start (the mandatory-buy-in era mostly died with the hype cycle). If a game requires a purchased NFT to begin, treat that as a risk signal, not an investment opportunity — check whether it’s flagged in our records before paying.
5. A small amount of patience for the onboarding flow. Embedded-wallet platforms hide the chain entirely (you may never interact with crypto directly); external-wallet platforms ask you to sign a first transaction. Know which model the game uses before you’re surprised mid-setup.
What you do NOT need#
- To buy crypto. Most 2026 games work without buying any token — assets and fees are either subsidised, in-game, or purchasable normally. The “buy ETH first” era is over on the serious platforms.
- A “gaming NFT wallet” product. Any wallet that works on the right chain works; nobody needs a special “NFT wallet” vendor.
- To spend anything up front to evaluate a game. Play first; decide about assets later.
Platform-by-platform cheat sheet#
| Platform | Wallet | Entry cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Immutable games | Passport (embedded) | usually free | email login hides the chain entirely |
| Ronin ecosystem | Ronin Wallet (external) | small RON for gas/items | self-custody — seed-phrase discipline required |
| Mythical / Pulse | in-app account + optional Pulse wallet | free tier exists | hybrid model — premium tier is on-chain |
| Solana games | Phantom (external) | variable | real gas + self-custody |
The one pre-flight safety check#
Before entering any game: bookmark the verified domain, keep a separate gaming wallet if you’re using self-custody, and know that the first signature you sign is where the risk is. Everything else is just gaming.
